American painter Naudline Pierre creates mesmerising works in oil, combining centuries-old European art historical traditions with her own personal mythology. Inspired by her upbringing as the daughter of a Haitian minister, Pierre’s paintings boast a distinct spirituality and usually feature an unearthly version of the artist herself, surrounded by angels and demons (as seen here), or adopting biblical poses. “[I’m] acknowledging the incredible history contained with my body and transferring it to a visual language co-opted from the dominant Western art historical canon,” Pierre has explained, an approach that is as powerful as it is empowered.
