Happy Bat Appreciation Day! We’re celebrating with Nikki Maloof’s cheeky painting Night Visitor, as seen in issue 34. This bewinged friend is looking in on the warm glow of the household, or perhaps he’s flashing? According to the artist, “There are certain animals I can’t paint and certain animals I can. I have no idea why painting a bat feels really natural to me and yet every time I tried to paint amphibians or reptiles it was impossible.” Maloof’s bright palette and cutesy aesthetic might seem comforting, but there is always a hidden anxiety bubbling under the surface.
