Niki de Saint Phalle, Dancing Nana, 1995

Merry Christmas! Here’s a suitably celebratory, snow-capped sculpture by Niki de Saint Phalle. The French artist created many such brightly coloured and voluptuous female figurines—which she dubbed “Nanas”—over the course of her career. Triumphant in pose and monumental in scale, they were intended to serve as “enduring emblems of maternity and femininity”, as well as being “a testament to the artist’s belief that all women are goddesses” (Tate).
