Oda Iselin Sønderland, Den Trojanske Hest, 2020

When you and your screen become one… This trippy watercolour is by Norwegian painter Oda Iselin Sønderland, who recently featured in our 5 Questions column. As Elephant’s Louise Benson describes, Sønderland’s images “meld mythology with internet culture, reflecting on everything from the burgeoning sexuality of puberty to the heretical symbols of the animal kingdom”. The artist often draws on her own dreams and memories for inspiration; as she explained in a quote pertinent to this particular image, “I explore sex dreams in the work, but also… shame. Shame and acceptance are both present in the image at the same time, as if you’re alone in your own room exploring the ‘forbidden’”.
