Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe, Orange Turtleneck, 2019

Sunny Saturday feels, as embodied by the protagonist of this wonderful painting by Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe, one of Elephant’s Spring/Summer 2021 cover artists, alongside fellow Ghanaian portrait painter Kwesi Botchway. Speaking to Amah-Rose Abrams in an interview for the issue, Quaicoe cites the work of the Old Masters as a key inspiration.I realised that these artists talked about what happened in their timeThat is why it is very important that we do the same. Whatever goes on in my life, as a Black person, maybe in the US or wherever I find myself; what goes on and how I am received, I take all those things into consideration and put it on the canvas.”
