The decade is almost done but Pantone has already predicted the colour of 2020: Classic Blue. Earlier this month, Pantone named their twenty-first colour of the year (their very first colour of the year was also a shade of blue). The 2020 hue recalls the night sky or deep sea, but why is it going to be so influential in the next year? The colour expert company note that Classic Blue connotes honesty, and gives the aura of something enduring and dependable—exactly what we’re looking for as we enter an uncertain and unstable new decade. Blue can be political and punchy too, and its known to create an edgy, sad mood, as any Van Gogh painting will tell you. Favoured by artists from Matisse to Yves Klein, classic blues are already, of course, popular in art, but now it’s popping up everywhere on Instagram (the colour is supposed to be anti-anxiety, making it especially favourable for interior design). But was Classic Blue the right choice for 2020? What would get your vote?
