Paolo Scirpa, Connected Approaches, 1987

For much of his career, the octogenarian, Italian artist Paolo Scirpa has been preoccupied with creating what he terms “infinity in simulated space”. From the 1970s onwards, he began using mirrors to multiply fluorescent tubes of light to hypnotic, three-dimensional effect. “I felt the need to create something that could evoke curiosity, inducing the observer to reflect on what they are seeing,” he told The Creators Project in 2013. “My intention is to present the transcendental problem of ‘light’, of which real light is nothing but a reflection.” Here’s one of his graphic creations, made in 1987, which poetically evokes a neon-lit tunnel on the edge of a pool of water.
