Darkroom Mirror Study 2017 Paul Mpagi Sepuya

Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Mirror Study, 2016

How do we get past the male gaze? This is one of the questions that arises from American artist, Paul Mpagi Sepuya’s upcoming solo exhibition at Foam Museum in Amsterdam. Mirror Study is part of body of work that Sepuya has been developing over the last three years, enquiring into the role of the artist, the camera and the gaze in relation to the black male body. His physical body in these images is continually fragmented, constructed and reconstructed in parts, a symbolic representation of the way we use photography today, to keep what we want and discard what we don’t.
