This looks like it could be a still from an early Wes Anderson film, but it is in fact an image from Peter Menzel’s 1994 photo book, Material World: A Global Family Portrait, taken in the depths of Russian winter. The project saw the American photojournalist bring together sixteen photographers from across the globe to construct a visual portrait of life in thirty nations by homing in on one “statistically average” family in each. The image-makers spent one week getting to know their designated families before taking their picture outside their respective homes, surrounded by a colourful array of their material possessions.
