Pixy Liao, Homemade Sushi, 2010

If you need inspiration for Halloween, here’s a heads up: Pixy Liao turned her boyfriend into a life-size sushi roll—and it looks like fun. Her photograph of Moro, her long-term boyfriend, is also symbolic of their unconventional relationship. Liao is Chinese and Moro is Japanese; she is five years older; she is the dominant figure in their relationship—all of these things, especially in China, Liao says, provokes wide-eyed responses. Their personal relationship became a way to examine the psychology of gender, race and sex, pushing their supposedly transgressive dynamic as far as it can go, depicting her boyfriend naked and in vulnerable positions. Homemade Sushi becomes a playful narrative that empowers all genders. Liao’s image is included in a solo exhibition, part of the international photography festival Fotografia Europea, happening across Reggio Emilia, until 9 June.
