China-born, New York-based artist Pixy Liao began her ongoing project Experimental Relationship in 2007 when she began dating a man five years her junior, thereby subverting the traditional expectation that women should partner with older men. The photo series playfully explores gender role reversal and “the alternative possibilities of heterosexual relationships”, to quote Liao. This work, titled It’s Never Been Easy to Carry You, is a sweet and candid portrayal of the emotional weight that so often accompanies love in all its guises.
