Ren Hang, Untitled, 2014

Sunday submersion… This striking and surreal photograph of a lily-pad lounger was taken by the late Chinese photographer Ren Hang, and demonstrates what Charlotte Jansen describes as his sharp attentiveness to composition and colour — “red applied to nails, lips and even the tips of penises; scintillating turquoise, most memorably in the feathers of a peacock.” This, she explains in a feature on Hang’s life and legacy for Elephant Issue 31, likely came from his “early career in advertising, when he first moved to Beijing from the suburbs of Changchun.” Purchase the back issue from Elephant Kiosk to read the article in full.
