René Magritte, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, 1935

Sundays are for reflecting, as per the protagonist of this beloved early work by the late, great Belgian surrealist, René Magritte. The painting is thought to have been inspired by the 18th-century French novel of the same name, which sees two rival lovers use sex to destroy the relationships of those around them, rather than submit to their desire for one another. In typical Magritte manner, the uncanny portrait of a woman and her reversed reflection is playful and philosophically perplexing in equal measure.
