This fuchsia-tinged forestscape was shot by the Irish photographer Richard Mosse, whose unique imagery “captures the beauty and tragedy in war and destruction” (Jack Shainman Gallery). It’s part of Mosse’s Infra series, documenting the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo using a discontinued type of infrared reconnaissance film by Kodak. This renders both Mosse’s subjects and their lush surroundings in shocking shades of red and pink, with the aim, he says, of “[up-ending] the generic conventions of calcified mass-media narratives and [challenging] the way we’re allowed to represent this forgotten conflict”.
