Sanyu, Acrobats on Horse, 1930-39

Some Monday stretching, courtesy of the Sichuan-born painter Sanyu. Sanyu moved to Paris in 1921, remaining there for the rest of his life, and was among the first wave of Chinese artists to join the Paris School during the 1920s, according to Sotheby’s. He studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, where he developed his “unique, cross-cultural aesthetic” which merged elements of traditional Chinese art with those of European modernism. Sanyu’s favoured subjects were “nudes, flowers and animals”, elegantly rendered in pale colours and soft tones—as per this limber performer and his trusty steed.
