Shanique Emelife, The Village, 2021

A warm and elegant celebration of community by the Bahamas-born, US-based artist Shanique Emelife—one of our six Artists to Watch this month. “Village, Emelife’s current show at Fortnight Institute in New York (until 9 January 2022) is an exploration of humans’ relationship with one another through eye contact, physical touch and social gathering,” writes Elephant’s Emily Steer. In this scene, “even figures who appear to be alone… are shown in relation to the life around them,” Steer notes, “whether the more sociable main group of people or the plants that surround them”. Find out which other artists’ work we’ve been admiring lately here.
