Shirley Villavicencio Pizango, Mi Negrita, 2018

Summer gardening goals… The Ghent-based, Peruvian artist Shirley Villavicencio Pizango makes joyful figurative paintings, reimagining the people she encounters in her day-to-day life in her own vibrant visual vernacular. Her work boasts a flat, geometric linearity, inspired, she says, by the famous Nazca Lines in the Peruvian desert, while embracing elements of modernist painting reminiscent of Henri Matisse and Frida Kahlo—with beautiful results.
