With its striking hue, perfectly juxtaposing with the verdant tones of its Lake District setting, this bright red bridge is impressive enough at a single glance. To discover, then, that it is made of paper—20,000 sheets, no less—and is capable of holding the weight of 60 sheep, renders it all the more remarkable. It was constructed by the British artist Steve Messam in 2015 and was commissioned by the Lakes Culture tourism board. Its purpose, Messam has said, was to create a focal point among the area’s storied landscape, allowing viewers the chance to better appreciate and gauge its colours, shapes and scale.
