Steve Schapiro, René Magritte at MoMA, 1965

In the most perfect instance of life imitating art, this picture sees the Belgian master of Surrealism, René Magritte, standing in front of his own painting, Golconda (1953), during a 1964 exhibition of his work at MoMA. The artist appears to have become part of the painting, dressed as he is in the same attire as the various bowler-hatted figures raining down behind him. The portrait was taken by the American photographer Steve Schapiro for Life magazine, and is, Schapiro has said, the image of which he is most proud.
