The colours in Stuart Lorimer’s paintings are deeply unsettling—he works with unusual combinations, which are just a touch unnatural, and in this work there is an overall sense of darkness suggested by the palette, except for the one sliver of golden sunlight which reflects off a building in the background. The figure at the front has a sense of unease about her too, casually lying to one side and raising a leg up, perhaps to relieve some pressure from her pregnancy bump. Just her head shows the sign of quick movement, with her features blurring, a second pair of eyes appearing from the flesh of her face. The work is currently on show in a joint exhibition with Jessie Makinson at Lyles & King, New York.
