Svetlana Petrova, Vincent van Gogh: Irises and the Cat, 2016

Happy International Cat Day, the ultimate excuse to celebrate all things feline and fabulous! This includes the work of Svetlana Petrova (aka Fat Cat Art). The premise of Petrova’s practice is simple, but the outcome is delightful: she deftly inserts images of her portly ginger cat, Zarathustra, into famous paintings using Photoshop, cleverly shifting the works’ narratives in the process. In her hands, Mona Lisa’s smile is finally explained (she has a fat cat in her lap), as is the mystery of Van Gogh’s precariously tilting vase of irises (pictured here).
