Thomas Theodor Heine, Siegfried, 1921

Today is National Puppy Day in the US—an excellent excuse to showcase a particularly sweet pug pup, painted by German Jugendstil-inspired painter and illustrator Thomas Theodor Heine in 1921. This furry fellow’s name was Siegfried, the painting’s title informs, but little else is known about him. It can be presumed, however, that his owner had an ample budget for and fine taste in furniture, as evidenced by the short-snouted canine’s plush velvet chair, and the glimpse of a complementary red rug and chic cherry cabinet behind him.
