Born and raised in New York, Alfonseca’s vibrant figurative paintings are inspired by her colourful childhood home, which was filled with “bright colours, fruits and plants”. The artist’s bio describes her work as a celebration of Black and Afro-Latinx diasporic culture, explaining that she deliberately places her deftly painted protagonists in “bold and picturesque settings in an active pursuit of opportunities that explore the nuances of the communities she is immersed in”.
