Tina Modotti, Frida Kahlo and Chavela Vagas, 1940s

Remembering the one and only Frida Kahlo, born on this day in 1907. Here she is pictured with her onetime lover, the singer Chavela Vargas, in a shot thought to have been captured by the photographer Tina Modotti. Vargas lived with the Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera for a brief stint at La Casa Azul, writing of the Mexican artist in a recently discovered letter, “She taught me a lot of things and I learned a so much. Without giving away too much, I held the sky with my hands, with every word, every morning.”
