Tomaso Binga, Alfabetiere Murale, 1976

T for Tuesday (and taking time to stretch). This letter-imitating individual is Tomaso Binga, the alter ego of Italian artist Bianca Pucciarelli Menna, here partaking in her acclaimed 1976 collage series Alfabetiere Murale. Binga’s work explores what she terms “the practice of art as writing”, existing at the intersection of words, imagery and performance. This playful piece—which sees a nude Binga enact each letter of the alphabet—perfectly encapsulates this concept, and was memorably revived in 2019 at the behest of Maria Grazia Chiuri for the set of Dior’s Autumn/Winter show.
