It’s almost time for Photo London—and this year’s programme of talks, events and exhibits is the most extensive yet. Among the artists on show is young gun Tony Gum. The much-hyped, young Cape Town-based photographer who has been on every art mag’s hot list since she put out her Black Coca Cola series in 2015. Often referencing her Xhosa roots, Gum’s work has evolved from fashion self-portraits to more sophisticated self-staging that talks of African tradition, contemporary global brand culture, aesthetics, daily life and politics. This striking image featuring a Springbok, Milk the Bok from the Ode to She series (2017), is presented by Christopher Moller Gallery, fittingly one of Cape Town’s trendiest ateliers, which resides in a two-storey townhouse. Gum proves why South Africa continues to produce some of the world’s most exciting and fresh photography.
