What’s your Sunday book of choice? Pictured here is Tracey Emin in Monument Valley—a majestic stretch of desert on the Arizona-Utah border—holding her self-penned tome, Exploration of the Soul. The photograph was taken during the British artist’s tour of America in the mid-nineties, accompanied by a tattered velvet armchair that belonged to her great-grandmother, and the book, a typically confessional text, which she wrote in just ten days. Emin travelled from state to state, reading from the book to anyone who wished to listen, and patching the name of every place she visited onto the chair, before exhibiting it as an artwork in its own right.
