A kinesthetic collage by Tschabalala Self. The rising American artist “recreates female forms that resist western beauty standards, and focuses on those who have often been excluded from the art historical canon,” wrote Louise Benson for Elephant Issue 43. Self draws on everything from pop culture to art history in the realisation of her tactile, large-scale works, as well as her own experiences of womanhood and being “a Black American… raised in [nineties] Harlem”. “I want people to feel validated by looking at my work,” she explained to Benson. “I don’t want to say uplifted, but I think it’s good to see a reflection of yourself. Representation matters.” Read the full feature here.
