A tentative reemergence… This theatrical set-up formed part of German artist Ulla von Brandenburg’s 2013 installation at the Secession in Vienna. Von Brandenburg’s multifaceted practice plays with ideas of performance—the staged and the incidental, the real and the illusory, the actors and the audience—through painting, graphics, installation and video art. In this case, she situated a projection room, showing her film Die Strasse, behind this painterly walk-in theatre, forcing viewers to cross the invisible offstage/onstage line to enter and question their own part in the proceedings.
