What archaeological wonder would you most like to visit? The ancient city of Petra in Jordan—once the capital of the Nabataean Arabs—is high on our list. “The Nabataeans buried their dead in intricate tombs that were cut out of the mountain sides and the city also had temples, a theatre and… [later], a colonnaded street and churches,” explains the site’s website. Dated between 18 and 40 AD, this building, known as Al-Khazneh or “The Treasury”, is the most extraordinary of all. Almost 40-metres high and decorated with friezes, Corinthian capitals and figurative sculptures, it was originally thought to be a temple but recent excavation has revealed a graveyard beneath it.
