Violeta Parra, Árbol de la Vida, 1963

This beautiful tapestry is the handiwork of Chilean artist and singer Violeta Parra, the once-dubbed “mother of the Latin American folk movement”—as discovered on the Instagram feed of writer and curator Simon Grant. In 1964, Parra, whose work will feature in this year’s Venice Biennale, was the subject of a solo show at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. “During the five weeks of the exhibition, Parra came to the museum every day to chat with visitors,” writes Grant of the occasion. “[She also continued] to work on her tapestries, play guitar, sing her incredible songs, as well as hand out the occasional empanada.”
