Vivien Zhang’s paintings are games of visual hide-and-seek: somewhere in their surfaces you might spot the intricate patterns of Central Asian kilim textiles; building blocks from the 1980s video game Contra; peaches from a discontinued beverage from her childhood; or columns from baroque architecture in Rome. At first glance, these shapes oscillate before your eyes, but look closer and you can decipher unexpected shapes and symbols. Zhang’s optical illusions can be seen at Long March Space, Beijing from next week.
