The ideal start-of-the-week disguise by German artist Volker Hermes, whose whimsical practice sees him digitally manipulate famous portraiture by European Old Masters to surreal and silly effect. A self-taught Photoshop whizz, Hermes uses the programme to exaggerate the sitters’ ruffs, collars, scarves and headpieces to the point where their faces become shrouded, forcing viewers to focus instead on the symbols of societal status and wealth their elaborate ensembles were chosen to convey. This peeping poser is Adriana Croes, based on the renowned 1644 portrait by Johannes Verspronck.
