Walasse Ting, Five Beauties with Flowers, 1970s

Who else is planning to spend this Saturday frolicking in their dressing gown? This sumptuous scene was painted by the late Chinese American artist Walasse Ting, celebrated for his eye-poppingly colourful depictions of cats, birds, flowers and nudes. His approach was famously fast and instinctive, with a focus on bold brushstrokes, inspired by Chinese calligraphy. “Paintings are my honey, colours are my flowers,” he once said. “Velocity is what’s required of a thief—he must paint as speedily as he draws a gun.”
