What’s the most interesting monument you’ve climbed? These keen clamberers atop Lady Liberty were captured by the celebrated American colour photographer William Albert Allard for National Geographic some time in the 1970s or ’80s (the exact date is hard to trace). Allard contributed to National Geographic for many years, and was considered “the pioneer and peerless exemplar of natural, expressive colour in documentary photography” by his fellow image-makers at the magazine (to quote Obscura Gallery). And it’s easy to see why.
