William Scott, Still Life, 1947

What’s your perfect Sunday breakfast? This egg-cellent set-up by Northern Irish artist William Scott, replete with eggs and freshly caught fish, has got our tummies grumbling. Scott was famed for his abstracted still lifes such as this, which, to quote Bonhams, “showed a keen interest in firm horizontal divisions, an austere palette and flatness of the picture surface”, as well as in fish. Indeed, Scott was a fanatical fisherman as well as fishy-breakfast eater, his preferred catches apparently being mackerel or sardines.
