In 2018, filmmaker Wu Tsang—featured in the brand new tenth anniversary issue of Elephant magazine—was the first artist in residence at Gropius Bau, Berlin. An exhibition opening today is the culmination of that residency and Tsang’s experience in getting to know the building Gropius Bau inhabits and its community. In response to the floods of violent imagery we’re constantly exposed to, Tsang has sought to find alternative forms of resistance and safe spaces in queer clubs and activist centres. Among the works on show at Tsang’s exhibition (her largest to date) is the ground-breaking short film, Girl Talk (2015) in which Tsang’s collaborator Moten dances euphorically in a sunlit garden in slow motion—an interpretation of Betty Carter’s jazz classic, Girl Talk. The show runs to January 12, 2020.
