For her compelling 2020 series At the Origins, Ukrainian photographer Xenia Petrovska explains that she set out to “establish dreamlike and mysterious scenes of my native village by examining the concept of home and belonging”. Nighttime snapshots of buildings, streets, and surrounding nature are cast in different coloured lights to poetic, deliberately surreal effect. “These photographs show the familiar sights of my childhood,” she continues. “They remind me of a dream which reveals our homeland to be a peculiar microcosm of a human being: a sacral place in our consciousness.”
