Xiang Jing, Dress Up, 2015–16

Some Wednesday whimsy, courtesy of Chinese artist Xiang Jing, famed for her evocative sculptures in fibreglass. Her favoured subject is the nude female form, captured in a variety of shapes, sizes and poses—some naturalistic, others uncanny. Her aim, she has said, is to investigate the “internality” of human nature, and preconceived notions of identity. Here, the subject’s distinguishing features are obscured by a swathe of pleated fabric which engulfs her upper body like a flower, leaving only her legs on show. Open-ended, elegant, and slightly eerie.
