Since the early 2000s, South African visual activist Zanele Muholi has documented and celebrated the lives of South Africa’s black lesbian, gay, trans, queer and intersex communities through their striking brand of black-and-white photography. Their work frequently confronts the oppression and discrimination faced by their subjects, while simultaneously shining a light on their bravery and beauty. This poignant image features the artist themselves, and is one of the many tender portrayals of couples captured by Muholi to honour queer love and “challenge [the] stereotypes and taboos” surrounding it (Tate). Happy Pride!
