Zhang Huan, To Add One Meter to an Anonymous Mountain, 1995

Hump Day sentiments… In 1995, Beijing East Village, an avant-garde artistic community located in the eastern part of the Chinese capital, was forced to disband. In response, the radical artist Zhang Huan and a number of his fellow residents joined forces for this public intervention on a mountain outside the city. This involved stripping naked and lying on top of one another to form an extra peak upon the horizon. The performance was inspired by the old Chinese saying, “Beyond the mountain, there are more mountains,” Zhang explained. “It’s about humility. Climb this mountain and you will find an even bigger mountain in front of you. It’s about changing the natural state of things, about the idea of possibilities.”
