There’s a hell of a lot to be said for an emoji that simultaneously expresses joy, pain and confusion, so let’s hear it for that especially toothy little yellow grimace. Seems we’re not the only ones enamoured with it: artist Zoe Beloff has also celebrated the weird visage as part of her current exhibition at Colchester’s Firstsite gallery, Emotions Go to Work. The Edinburgh-born, New York-based artist’s installation looks at the power of technology to “read our feelings and transform them into valuable assets”, according to the gallery, and includes stills from early black-and-white cartoons, kinetic experiments, advertorials, film projection, watercolours and cardboard cut-outs. Emojis play a starring role here; exepmlifying the confluence of human and machine.
