Modupeola Fadugba, Deep Blue See, 2018

The Accra based Gallery 1957 opens a new exhibition by Togo-born Nigerian artist Modupeola Fadugba today. Her work encompasses painting, video and collage, and engages with issues surrounding black identity, visibility and the politics surrounding swimming, with much of the work on show in Dreams from the Deep End informed by her recent residency in New York. Here, she specifically references the legacy of complex racial politics and segregation in the US, exemplified around municipal pools, and worked closely with The Harlem Honeys and Bears, a senior synchronized swimming team, to bring new imagery to life.
