Anna Bu Kliewer, Quicksanding Solitude from the series Floral Faults

Finally, today is the first day of spring. So as we tuck away our woollies and look ahead to a time filled with bunnies, sunshine every day and so on, what better way to mark the occasion than with an image packed with floral joy? Hang on—sure, there are flowers here, but joy? Maybe not so much. This collage by London-based artist Anna Bu Kliewer certainly has something rather dark about it. The piece is from her aptly titled show Floral Faults, which ran last week at Curve Gallery in Berlin. Her work challenges perceptions of “identity and nature”, placing found imagery into new, unexpected situations. The Floral Faults series examines “femininity and the beauty of its imperfections”, according to the gallery, showing “faults” in a more positive light. “Flowers and natural shapes are extraordinary, not one flower is identical to the other, the same applies to humanity.”
