Anna Bunting-Branch, The Linguists, 2017

There’s a certain branch of feminist theory that argues that language is inherently masculine and that it will therefore always corrupt female expression. If words are off limits for women, then perhaps visual expression is the way to go? Anna Bunting-Branch’s video installation The Linguists explores this, asking us to think about why and how language is created and used. Perhaps if we break free of patriarchal restraints, a whole new mode of expression will be discovered. Inspired by fan-fiction, Bunting-Branch explores feminist visions and re-visions of history within her work. The video is being shown at FACT Liverpool, as part of its new exhibition You Feel Me_, in which it will show the work of several artists who explore ways of disrupting power. The exhibition will run until 23 February.
