Lebanese-British artist Aya Haidar’s mixed-media artworks “incorporate found and disposable objects that add extra layers of human connection”, writes Chloë Ashby in a new interview with Haidar for Elephant. One such example is Kiass, a series that stemmed from Haidar’s three-month residency with Deveron Arts in Aberdeenshire, which aimed to integrate Syrian refugees into rural Scotland. Haidar spoke with the men, women and children she encountered—who had fled their country on foot, carrying their essential belongings in plastic bags—to discover what they had brought with them, thereafter hand-embroidering these objects on the bags themselves. Discover more about Haider’s powerful practice, and the ways in which it redefines domesticity, here.
