Bill Brandt, London, 1959

There’s always something compelling about strange configurations of the human form, and German-born photographer Bill Brandt’s beguilingly soft yet dynamic photography style brings the body to life in entirely new ways. Brandt’s work is on show at London’s Michael Hoppen Gallery until 19 January in an exhibition of pieces selected from across the artist’s archives. “Within this time capsule, we found wonderful early prints and nudes, which highlighted Brandt’s inquisitive mind and his energetic search for a new way of photographing these well-trodden subjects,” writes Hoppen. “Brandt’s signature photographic style of highly textural objects contrasted with the flattened perspective of the images created a uniquely oblique approach.”
