“There’s a teenage girl who has been floating around my head since 2006, which would make her not a teenager anymore,” writes Claire Marie Healy for Elephant’s This Artwork Changed My Life column. She is speaking of this ethereal image, Untitled #20, by Australian photographer Bill Henson, which she first encountered at the age of 14. “This was the first time I [had seen] a work in a museum that felt like it spoke directly to the condition of being young and a girl,” she says in reference to the drifting protagonist, whom she felt encapsulated her own private yearning to expand beyond her limits.
