Carlos Pazos, Milonga, 1980

Something that a few of us are perhaps dwelling on in the post NYE-haze is the strange sense of loneliness that can sometimes creep through even in those settings which purportedly enable the opposite: bars, nightclubs, places where lots of booze and bodies are, basically. This shot is a staged self-portrait by Spanish artist Carlos Pazos, and he looks lost and mournful in his own world, bathed in the strange, queasy green light of a Barcelona nightclub. This image will be on show at the Whitechapel Gallery’s forthcoming exhibition of works from “la Caixa” Collection of Contemporary Art, selected by Spanish novelist Enrique Vila-Matas, which runs from 17 January until 28 April.
