Elliott Erwitt, USA. New York City, 2000

There’s an old cliche that certain people look (or take on the appearance of) their dogs—or perhaps vice versa—but surely not to the extent documented in this surreal, rather hilarious photograph by Elliott Erwitt. The advertising and documentary photographer has been working for more than sixty years, and has long been fascinated with the more lighthearted possibilities of his medium, capturing the oddities to be found in the drudgery of daily life. He also has a long-held obsession with dogs, about which he’s published five books, including 1974’s Son of a Bitch, Dogs Dogs (1998) and Ellliot Erwitt’s Dogs a decade later.  “I am obsessed with dogs—because they remind me of people, but with more hair,” the photographer has said. This work is among the photographs by a number of image-makers that form part of Obsessions, Magnum’s square print sale, which runs until midnight EST on 14 June (5am 15 June in the UK).
